The impact of scientific technologies and new discoveries on oral health globally
Workshop Facilitator Dr Irina Dragan, DDS, MS; Assistant Professor/ Program Director; Tufts University School of Dental Medicine)
Workshop Aim
Drawing on our previous meeting in London which focused on the vast array of scientific and technological development now available to the dental educator, this session brings together the themes of Teaching Person Centered Care and Leveraging science and technology for global impact.
1. Teaching Clinic of the Future
Speaker Professor Muhammad Walji, PhD, Associate Dean for Technology Services & Informatics and Professor, University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston
Session description: Present a vision for the teaching clinic of the future with a focus on person-centered care. This model highlights an innovative approach by blending the latest technologies with scientific discoveries to facilitate a comprehensive oral health in an academic setting.
Participation in this workshop will enable delegates:
- To describe the differences and similarities between the concepts: “person” vs. “patient” vs. “student” -centered dental teaching care.
- To discuss opportunities and challenges to incorporate such a model for the academic, research, and practicing dental communities.
2. Pioneering the Use of Technology in Dental Education: Lessons Learned
Speaker Marjoke Vervoorn, DDS, PhD; PChair of Research and Development of Dental Education, Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Session description Presenting the story and the lessons learned of bringing a dream into reality by development and implementation of a new technology. The dream consisted of a futuristic approach to clinical dental training integrating technology and clinical training. Factors such as protection of system borders, what makes a team successful and the challenges of resistance to change will be discussed.
Participation in this workshop will enable delegates:
- To discuss opportunities and challenges for stakeholders when aiming to incorporate use of new technologies in a dental curriculum
- To identify risk factors for success
- To create an implementation strategy
- To assess institutional outcomes: education and patient care
Applying Educational Models (Logic, Kirkpatrick) in the Teaching Clinic of the Future.
Learning Objectives The participants will be able to apply the ideas proposed by Dr. Walji and Dr. Vervoorn in the keynote addresses to the proposed educational models in an ideal dental education setting.Format: Participants will be randomly divided into groups and will work collaboratively.
Pre-workshop Assignments: Readings about the Kirkpatrick and Logic Educational models. Apply the concepts to one of the on-site initiatives at the participants’ own institution.
